Mud Tyres
Mud tyres are a very specific type of tyre for cars. They are designed to be used, as you might expect, on muddy terrain.
This is essential as general use tyres that most cars and wheels come fitted with tend to slip too much in mud, not gaining the traction needed to propel the vehicle forwards (or backwards).
This can lead to very dangerous driving conditions for normal use tyres. The car won’t brake anywhere near as well as it would with mud tyres, it doesn’t handle at all well – tending to slide, or lose control of the rear causing a tail spin.
So it is important that you look to mud tyres if you are going to be doing any amount of driving in muddy conditions, especially off road.
Benefits of mud tyres
So what benefits can you expect to get from using mud tyres?
- Better handling in the mud – far less slide and a lot more control over turns
- Less stopping distance. The extra traction gained by using mud tyres means that you are able to stop your vehicle in a much shorter distance than with traditional tyres
- More hard wearing. Being in muddy conditions means having to content with sharp rocks and stick. A normal tyre is not likely to be able to stand up to much punishment in that sort of terrain, but a mud tyre will be unlikely to burst unless faced with quite exceptional circumstances.
- Fuel efficiency. By gaining more traction you need to spin the wheels less – which in turn means less fuel wasted on wheel turns that aren’t doing anything at all.
And the negatives of using mud tyres? Well just one really – it is not designed to be used on main road. You can use them but they will be less fuel efficient and far more noisy than other tyres.
